They should have anticipated the appeal of an insurgent candidacy, whether the insurgency is real or perceived doesn't matter. They thought they were the insurgents! I think they wanted to believe the Jesse Ventura phenomenon was a fluke.

Another mistake is playing not to lose. The only bold statement Bush has made so far is when he gave the Republican congress and Robert Bork the back of his hand. That does not excite the grass roots.

The biggest flaw in the process is the open primary. We are allowing Democrats to select our candidate. There are union members in Michigan lining up now to register Republican. Democrats are licking their chops in California, too. Limbaugh was saying there are Democrats showing up there to register with huge grins on their faces. They get to be saboteurs! What fun!!

The irony is that in California the rule was changed by Tom Campbell, the moderate Republican who didn't think he could win a primary if only Republicans voted.
