Wednesday February 9, 10:05 am Eastern Time Romanian Bank Declared Bankrupt BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) -- A Romanian bank which owed hundreds of thousands of creditors almost $15 million has been declared bankrupt, a bank official said Wednesday. After a tense meeting between creditors and bank officials on Tuesday, the Bucharest Court declared the beleaguered Bankcoop bank insolvent, the daily Cotidianul reported. ``The court ruled that bankruptcy proceedings should begin,' said Gabriela Spranceana, a Bankcoop spokeswoman. She declined to say whether the bank would contest the court decision. The bank, which owes $14.5 million, can contest the decision before the Supreme Court within 15 days. A few hundred of the 600,000 account holders who lost money threw coins at the court windows in a sign of protest, the paper reported.(cont) biz.yahoo.com
