World Heart today provided an update on progress toward clinical use of its HEARTSAVERvad product.
"The battery charging and related systems improvements announced during the second half of 1999 have been completed. Preclinical trials are scheduled to be completed during the third quarter of this year. Subject to Health Canada approval, first human implant is planned for the fourth quarter." said Roderick M. Bryden, president and chief executive officer.
"Acute animal and bench tests of prototype HEARTSAVERvad product continued during the fourth quarter 1999 and are continuing in the first quarter of this year. Formal long-term trials, both in vivo and in vitro, are scheduled for the second quarter with anticipated completion of this program and submission to Health Canada in the third quarter. An update will be provided during the course of this program, as we progress toward clinical use," Mr. Bryden said.
Full financial information will be provided with year-end results to be announced later this month. World Heart ended 1999 with approximately $25-million of cash and liquid investments, as previously forecast, which is expected to finance the company well into 2001.
