CREE

Mike, I could never knock a carpetologist...my father-in-law was one and I need to maintain marital bliss! Besides it appears to have given you the proper foundation for cutting up things to get them to fit together (all puns intended!)

) I gather from your post that there are two critical propreitary architectures -- the technology that allows CREE to grow SiC and another technology that allows them to use the raw SiC materials to make specific devices. Did I word that reasonably accurately?

Yup... you hit the nail on the head

2)We just have to be creative here force fitting CREE into the context of the manual.

3A)The proprietary architecture used to make SiC-based LEDs will be competing with other proprietary architectures used to do the same. Right?

Right, but the others are mostly made in cost disadvantaged material/ process.

3B)Most if not all of the SiC will be grown by CREE and sold (eventually if not presently) to some of their competitors in a spirit of co-opetition. Right?

That is apparently the situation today. Several others are attempting to break into the SiC growth/ layer deposition business. It remains to be seen how robust CREE's patents are in this area.

3C) There will be SiC grown by others but a lot if not most of it will grown by those who have licensed CREE's proprietary technology to do so. Right?

It's not clear to me that CREE has licensed anybody the technology for crystal growing. It is my guess that firms like Infineon (Siemens) probably demanded those rights and got them. My second guess is that most of the licensing revolves around how to process the materials into devices. I think CREE is reluctant to let the crystal growing know how out of the plant other than the various patent positions. Their JV with Charles and Covard has the latter purchasing the equipment and leaving it at CREE. This may be for the convenience of Charles and Covard, but I think it may be a tad more strategic than that.

Our best bet to uncover more details in this regard is for Unclewest's friend to pose the question to CREE's management the next time he talks with them.

Hope that helps.
