Williams Communications Expands European and Canadian Capabilities With Teleglobe
February 10, 2000 07:28 AM TULSA, Okla., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Williams Communications WCG , an international provider of telecommunications services and products for the carrier marketplace, has significantly expanded its network's international reach through acquisition of long-term capacity on Canadian and Pan-European network segments operated by Teleglobe TGO , a leading supplier of global broadband and data services. Under the agreement, Williams Communications gains significant long-term capacity on Teleglobe's European network providing Williams with connectivity to London, Brussels, Amsterdam and major markets in France and Germany including Strasbourg and Paris and Dusseldorf and Frankfurt respectively. Williams is also acquiring significant long-term capacity into Canada, interconnecting its United States network with Teleglobe's Canadian network in Vancouver, British Columbia. Additionally, Williams obtains ample collocation facilities and network maintenance throughout the Teleglobe network.
A key component of this transaction is Williams' ability to make its innovative product, Williams Optical Wave Service(SM), portable throughout the growing Teleglobe network. Williams Optical Wave Service(SM), is a flexible, industry-leading product that improves time to market by providing individual 2.5 Gbps wavelengths through a transparent interface between networks.
Through optical waves, as the Teleglobe network expands, so does Williams ability to expand with it. This enables Williams Communications to rapidly add capacity to its international network to extend deeper into European and Canadian markets, add new markets or acquire additional trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific capacity.
"With the scheduled completion of our 33,000-mile United States network by the end of this year, Williams Communications is now forging ahead with an aggressive international strategy," said Frank Semple, president of the Williams network.
This is the second agreement between Williams Communications and Teleglobe. In January, Williams Communications announced its receipt of $200 million to provide Teleglobe with fiber and network services on 14,000-route miles of Williams' United States fiber-optic network.
Williams Communications has the largest next-generation fiber-optic network in the United States with 26,000 route miles of fiber deployed, 24,000 miles lit and 33,000 planned route miles connecting 125 cities by the end of this year. The fully integrated architecture of the Williams Multi- Service Broadband Network(TM) couples ATM core switching with advanced optical networking technologies to provide carriers with data, voice, video and Internet services over any platform. Williams Communications has earned widespread industry recognition for its network architecture-most recently the International Engineering Consortium's InfoVision award.
