Cooperation Will Enable Remote Access to Corporate Data via Voice Recognition and Navigation
NEW ORLEANS — Feb. 8, 1999 — Wireless Knowledge LLC, a joint venture company between Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and QUALCOMM Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM) , and General Magic (NASDAQ: GMGC) today announced plans to provide RevolvSM service users with voice-enabled access to information and corporate groupware. The announcement is being made in conjunction with the CTIA Wireless 99 conference in New Orleans, where the companies will be demonstrating the new capability in the Microsoft booth #6623 and General Magic booth #2925.
Announced in January, Revolv is the first in a series of services from Wireless Knowledge that will provide mobile professionals with secure access to important information and Microsoft® Exchange groupware using a variety of wireless and mobile devices from anywhere they travel. With the addition of General Magic's magicTalk™ platform, voice users will soon have the ability to interact with and navigate their important information through the natural extension of voice and speech recognition.
General Magic's magicTalk™ voice platform will provide the voice user interface capability for users of Wireless Knowledge's Revolv service offering. The patent-pending technology will provide Revolv users with the option to easily communicate with their email, calendar, contacts, news and other information. Simple conversational phrases such as "Do I have any new messages?" can be used when interacting with email, or "What are my appointments for today?" when accessing the calendar.
"General Magic looks forward to extending our industry-leading voice platform to the corporate users of Wireless Knowledge's innovative Revolv service," said Steve Markman, Chairman, CEO and President of General Magic. "The powerful combination of our companies services and technologies will help take the idea of anytime, anywhere communications to the next level."
"Adding voice-enabling capabilities to the already cutting-edge wireless data access solution, will enhance our efforts to offer the richest, most complete mobile computing services possible," said John Major, president and chief executive officer of Wireless Knowledge. "We are looking forward to working with General Magic and are extremely excited about the unique solutions that our two companies will soon provide to busy mobile professionals."
Voice access to Revolv is expected to be available by mid-1999 as a premium service add-on. Revolv is available now on an OEM basis to wireless carriers. Commercial end-user availability from the first carrier partners is expected in summer 1999. The service provides wireless services to access messaging, email, calendaring, contact list, and news, plus access to Microsoft® Exchange-based corporate networks. Additional features and services will be added over time.
