Hi KLP & Levy. Underdog ads must be created in a very sophisticated manner in order to be successful. I was not in advertising but I saw some of the periphery. The most famous and, still, best remembered is the Avis "We try harder" claiming to be No.2 and wanting to be No.1. All this accomplished was to distance Avis further back from No.1, Hertz. In fact, as you probably know, Hertz' uses this No.1 identification in many of its ads/commercials to this day, although Enterprise may be giving them a run for this claim.
