Perhaps 9984 doesn't want to have to take majority positions in companies, as CMGI did with Alta Vista. ICGE's moratorium is expiring soon, and they will need to do the same. I see the whole situation most unsurprising. If US individuals could (and some may do so anyway) they would structure their investments offshore to avoid tax, in places like HK. Look at the hedge fund industry-it has largely moved offshore to avoid overregulation in the US. Does that necessarily make an offshore fund a bad investment? I don't think so.

As to FASB, it seems corporations like Intel, Cisco etc are now liquidating their private equity holdings in a timely fashion to 'smooth out' quarter on quarter earnings in the US, and what does FASB say about that? Not much, I as I understand it. Intel, Cisco use private equity because of the transparent market they operate in. Son doesn't operate in this market at a publicly traded entity and, thankfully, doesn't have this problem.
