PepsiCo in Talks With China Continental on Mineral Water Plant


Hong Kong, Feb. 10 (Bloomberg) -- PepsiCo Inc., the world's No. 2 soft-drink maker, is in talks with a China Continental Inc. unit about building and operating a mineral water plant in China, China Continental said.

Dong Wu Bio Tech Farm covers 406 square kilometers (162 square miles) of farmland in China's Inner Mongolia province and can produce as much as 5,000 metric tons (5,500 tons) of natural unpolluted water per day, China Continental said in a statement.

China Continental has been looking for a larger partner to help it sell Dong Wu's mineral water and better compete in the Chinese marketplace, said Harry H.H. Ho, China Continental chairman. The company wants to sell it in China as well as other countries.

PepsiCo's shares rose 3/16 to 34 3/16 in midafternoon trading. They've fallen 11 percent in the past year. China Continental's shares rose 5/16 to 2. Before today, they'd more than tripled in the past year.
