London, April 25 (Reuter) - Cobalt used in batteries is forecast to surge by 184 percent by the year 2,000, according to Marcel Meeus of Union Miniere.

Speaking at a Cobalt Development Institute (CDI) conference in Hong Kong this week Meeus said that assuming that there is no percentage change of cobalt per battery unit from present levels total cobalt consumption in batteries is estimated to increase to 5,370 tonnes by 2,000 from 1,890 tonnes in 1996.

Cobalt will particularly benefit from lithium-ion battery demand which was forecast to rise to 4,320 tonnes in the year 2,000 from 940 tonnes.

World demand for small rechargeable batteries is forecast to increase to 2,420 million units from 2,055 million units over the same period, he added.
