Cobalt:

See MB's comment.

Check out the orders of magnitude added in the last few years (both actual fiber trunk lines as well as new methods of transmission). Recall Irridium's forecasts for satellite phone useage?

You are looking at the situation from a consumer point of view. I'm looking at it from the provider's perspective. Knowing the rough costs of installation (trunk) on a per mile basis, and also being aware of the exorbitant estimates for re-wiring the current twisted pair environment (that is the REAL nasty sitting out there unless you go with the local cable provider. Most of THEM also have a replacement problem as many still use ancient, "leaky" coax.),I cannot see how any latecomers will ever get back the cost of the installation, never mind make any dough.

Best, Earlie
