Hello Folks - quite quiet out there any more? Here is an unsolicited followup e-mail from NIMA OGC-IPT co-chair - Sue Kalweit re: a question I had as to how Sedona (small company) can be competitive playing in company with such heavy weights as MSFT, ORCL, etc.

thought as to why/how a small company like Sedona Geoservices ends up
being competitive-it has to do with the concept of componentware. That
is, in the future, as we move to a component-based environment "glued"
together by interoperable specifications that are implemented by these
components, such as the OGIS spec and OGC work, vendors will be looked at
for what their components provide, and I think a small company would be
able to be highly competitive with larger companies in a niche area. That
is, a component-based environment allows niche companies to excel in an
industry that broadly speaking is highly competitive because they can
focus on developing highly specialized capability in one area, take
raster to vector conversion, that, when built to a common/open interface
specification is "plug and play' in a multitude of customer environments
who have standardized on this common interface (e.g. the OGIS). I hope
