The next Cisco of server hardware

CBS NEWS

Shares of Sun Microsystems (SUNW: news, msgs) rose to an all-time high, lifted by ABN Amro's decision to upgrade the stock to "outperform" from "hold," saying that the company is on track to become the next Cisco of server hardware.

In a research note, analyst Jonathon Ross said that after a two-day analyst conference he sees an acceleration of hardware sales as "almost inevitable in light of Sun's three compelling bets," including massive scale, continuous computing and integrated stacks. Hardware revenue could stretch past his 27 percent estimate, he said.

Ross said that massive scale requires a framework like Sun's Solaris operating system that can handle wireless or Internet applications, among others. Continuous computing suggest that devices will make computing available everywhere and at any time.

The analyst explained that an integrated stack -- in both hardware and software -- means that application servers will ship with operating systems and that storage will ship "more tightly" with servers.

The stock was up 3 1/16 to 94 5/8 after trading at an all-time high of 95 11/16.
