As I heard it, the dogs were perfectly okay when found by the police; I don't think either was injured. Perhaps after finding the dogs hiding upstairs the killers petted them? Don't you think that would be an extremely weird thing to do? And if the dogs smelled blood, I believe they'd have been very wary.
