<< American Mobile Shares Rise on Prospects for Wireless E-mail

Reston, Virginia, Feb. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Shares of American Mobile Satellite Corp., a mobile data-service provider, rose 27 percent on investor optimism for the company's wireless e-mail service, analysts said.

American Mobile rose 5 1/2 to 25 11/16 in trading of 5.6 million shares, almost eight times the three-month daily average. The stock has risen almost fivefold in the past year.

Shares of paging companies like Metrocall Inc. and Paging Network Inc. have rallied in the past two weeks as they announce plans to remake themselves as providers of wireless Internet access, portable e-mail devices and other advanced two-way messaging services.

``There has been a great focus on the wireless stocks based on their ability to handle e-mail like messages,' said Wit SoundView analyst Tim O'Neil, who has a ``strong buy' rating on the stock. ``More and more, content providers as well as Internet service providers are looking to participate in a wireless network which will support e-mail.'

American Mobile's ``eLink' service works as a wireless e-mail device, a personal organizer and competes with a similar service from BellSouth Corp. Both the American Mobile and BellSouth products are manufactured by Canada's Research in Motion Ltd.

MCI WorldCom Inc.'s SkyTel paging unit officially launched the eLink service last month. SkyTel has about 850 sales representative trying to sell the product, American Mobile spokesman David Wonderling said. >>
