I'll pipe in here, based on my recent learning in the last couple of days. Many will undoubtedly correct me if I'm wrong.

Are their techniques to produce the SiC itself discontinuous and if so to whom?

Commercially acceptable qualities and quantities are made only by CREE. If that ain't discontinuous, what is? Incorporating the SiC into chip sets is discontinuous. Incorporating the chip sets into end-use products is discontinuous. End users find all of that rather boring because to them, it's all continuous.
