With the benefit on hindsight we can see that the VP selection mattered little in Reagan's first landslide.

At the time I was hoping for Kemp, though many loyalists wanted Laxalt. I'd say Kemp would have used the eight years better than Bush. I can't imagine Kemp causing the type of party split that Bush engendered in 1992. You should recall that recent biography which asserted that Reagan didn't think Bush had much of a backbone. True or not, that seems accurate. Wasn't Thatcher was there to supply one during his "success", telling Bush not to go "wobbly" on her? Too bad there was no domestic Thatcher.

I do recall that I was relieved that the feckless Ford boomlet was just an invention of the media that wanted to ruin Republican chances. So in that context I was actually relieved when Bush was chosen.

Expedience has its price.
