Another split occurred when M.E. Bradford was tapped to be Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The neoconservatives got in a tizzy over it because Bradford had written several essays and a book that were critical of Lincoln. Bradford was told to hit the road and Bill Bennett got the job instead. The recently converted Democrat operative being chosen over Bradford, who was a true scholar, didn't sit well with a lot of academic conservatives.
