OT Denial of Service Attacks Your reference to the cable company's alerts is very interesting. Can you possibly shed some more light.

Our cable company sent notice to look for a program in the startup directory (It had something to do with the clock, but I forget the name, maybe ICLOCK.EXE) They wanted the program erased right away if it was found. Perhaps it was due to people leaving file sharing on since they also mentioned to be sure and turn it off. Then we were cut off from newgroups for a couple of days (I think they called it an interdiction) where the outlying ISPs refused to forward newgroups to the cable carrier until they installed some filters and completed their scans of the customer base. This was expected to take several days since not all of the computers are on every day. Finally they suggested looking into protection software and disabling FTP. The Usenet compaint (hence the interdiction) was both these pinging 'bots and bulk junk mail re-mailers using the customer systems.
