Drew Re The Enterprise
The route to Dells success this year should be the server/storage/ router items. Web traffic is getting so heavy its going to demand placing banks of storage nearer the user and Dell has the low-cost solution to those ISP's and providers where money is always short supply.
For example I am continually reminded by Microsoft of recommended changes to Win 98 ( or Real Player). The Web traffic to Redmond would be enormous if everyone downloaded a 2 hour revision from there, but Msft could send the revision to multiple locations much nearer the user with one command. They already do that, but many more locations would be more efficient.
Dell must be very well aware of the situation, in their agreements to update users systems as revisions to software become available.
So overall I think Dell has underpromised by saying there will be little improvement until the second half. What Dell does not know is whether sales to industries that postponed spending last quarter is
going to improve in this new quarter. Until it actually happens (or not).
Dell admitted that 500 salespeople and many workers in Nashville were under-employed last quarter, yet they were kept on the payroll
so Dell is making the bet they will be needed.
