Heinz provided a very interesting study on the true state of oil supply and demand a few weeks back. The study author argued very persuasively that much of the reserve revisions of the last few years was reserve inflation on the part of OPEC members to help increase their current market quota, and that the rate of new oil discoveries is actually decreasing asymptotically, while oil consumption is exploding -- you know, all those SUVs.

I know all about the 70's seemingly false alarms. It seems to me that the alarms were simply early by 30 years or so.
