An Internet Host Maintains a Vigil

SAN JOSE, Feb. 10 -- If you set out on a search for the heart of the Internet, for a place where you could literally stand in the middle of cyberspace, you might very well end up on the 18th floor of the Fairmont Plaza Building here.

Looked up a stock quote on CNet recently? Bid for a Kewpie doll on eBay? Watched a World Wrestling Federation match courtesy of E Media? E-mailed a cousin in Hong Kong? Sought medical advice from WebMD?

If so, there's a good chance your transaction passed through the 18th floor, the West Coast center of operations for AboveNet Communications Inc. But if you've been here electronically, it's much harder to visit physically. The ordinary elevators go no farther than the 17th floor; only the freight elevator stops at the 18th. Then there's a door with both a guard and an electronic gate. Everywhere there are security cameras to ferret out intruders.
