SB:

The Japanese dereg (3 stages) has been underway for a year now, so I suspect, (but don't know), that we've probably seem the big shifts. That said, I simply do not know how to figure the political situation. While it doesn't seem to be well understood by many investors over here, the bond and currency guys are really worried about Japan's steep slide into a ghastly deficit and a shrinking GDP. Japan's borrowing requirements are huge and now have more than modest impact on the global bond markets (was it less than a decade ago that they ran nothing but surpluses?). Will Japan bite the bullet and cut back the deficit? The MoF says it's a must but the PM says not till next year (yeah, sure). This situation is not only messy, it's hard to sort out.

One thing is for sure, and that is every day they put off taking the medicine, just makes the convalescence period that much longer.

Best, Earlie
