Legato Introduces First Data Replication Software Available for Windows 2000 PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 9, 2000--
Octopus 4.0 Includes Application, Performance and Configuration Enhancements To Help Organizations Better Protect Business-Critical Data in Windows 2000 and Windows NT Environments Legato(R) Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:LGTO), the leader in enterprise storage management software, today announced immediate availability of the first data replication and disaster recovery software to support Windows 2000. When deployed on Windows 2000 servers, Legato's Octopus 4.0 provides real-time data protection and high availability so business managers have continuous access to data they need to make timely and knowledgeable business decisions. Legato Octopus 4.0 also includes several unique performance features that can improve the overall productivity of workers. Additionally, it includes new configuration features that enable IT departments to more easily install upgrades and maintain the system, which minimizes system downtime. "Business-critical data is a valuable corporate asset and should be managed with that in mind," said Dan Kusnetzky, program director of operating environments and serverware research services at IDC. "Legato's Octopus software allows companies having Windows NT-based IT infrastructures to develop an affordable disaster recovery program." In addition to the support for Windows 2000, Octopus 4.0 offers a new level of protection for Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS). Legato's Octopus further protects data within a MSCS environment by replicating the data from remote servers outside the cluster to other clusters or stand-alone systems for disaster recovery purposes. With version 4.0, customers can configure Octopus to be active on both nodes within a MSCS cluster. This allows any data from the shared disk within the MSCS environment to be protected. Ultimately, it provides users with continued access to their data even if the two-node cluster fails.
"Information that empowers today's e-businesses and Fortune 500 companies is increasingly found on Windows networks," said Jim Chappell, senior vice president, Legato Systems. "Octopus is an integral part of Legato's vision of delivering Information Continuance to its customers, and we will persistently bring additional enhancements to the product over time to ensure it meets the increasing data protection and fault resilience requirements of Windows-based IT infrastructures." Legato's Octopus software provides data protection for Windows 2000 and Windows NT networks by replicating data from source systems to local and/or remote target systems, providing high availability for mission-critical data in the event the data is damaged or destroyed at the primary location. Octopus 4.0 includes key product enhancements that increase the speed by which data can be replicated. Other new features simplify configuration and ongoing administration of the Octopus product. These enhancements include: Performance Features: -- Streamlined replication process offers improved performance by eliminating disk writes during the normal replication process. Legato Octopus 4.0 instead captures updates to files on a source system, queues them to a shared memory buffer then forwards the updates to the specified target system applying them directly to the corresponding file. -- Check-Sum Binary Compare for Incremental Synchronization determines which files have changed, extracts only those changes and copies them instead of copying the entire file during the incremental synchronization. -- Persistent Site List allows Octopus to retain a list of network sites even after the Octopus service has been stopped. The Site List displays the sites where Octopus is installed and the status of the Octopus service at each site. Configuration Features: -- Specification Dialog Box now allows users to select files to be replicated from a file tree view similar to that of Windows NT Explorer. The dialog box has been separated into four streamlined windows to improve ease-of-use: Global Excludes, Mirror Files, Mirror Shares, and Mirror DFS Shares. -- Specification Wizard is now the default for configuring specifications. The Wizard steps users through the dialog box for initial setup of a specification. This feature can be disabled via the Client Options Dialog box. -- Synchronization Cancel option allows a synchronization already in progress to be stopped without having to delete the data directory. Pricing and Availability Legato Octopus 4.0 is available immediately with introductory pricing starting at $2,000 per system. This special pricing is guaranteed for three months and includes one year of maintenance and 24x7 telephone support. The product is available directly through Legato and through certified Legato resellers. |
