AMD Says 1st-Quarter Sales to Be Better Than Expected

Sunnyvale, California, Feb. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc. said it expects sales in the first quarter to be about even with or higher than the $968.7 million it had in the fourth quarter as demand for cheap microprocessors soars.

AMD, Intel Corp.'s biggest rival in the personal-computer chip market, said last month that it expected first-quarter sales to be unchanged to slightly down from the fourth quarter's. The company's fourth-quarter profit more than doubled as it sold 800,000 of its Athlon processors.

The company is expected to earn 32 cents a share in the first quarter, the average estimate of analysts polled by First Call/Thomson Financial. In the year-ago quarter, AMD had a loss from operations of $118.8 million, or 81 cents, on sales of $631.6 million.

``Business across the board continues to be robust,' said Jerry Sanders, AMD chairman and chief executive, in a statement.

AMD last traded at 42 15/16 before trading was halted for the news. The shares of the Sunnyvale, California, company have more than doubled in the past year.
