Good question. I think Mr. Sanders is in something resembling denial. He's made extraordinary bets on microprocessors, and has to keep everybody believing in them in order to not be drawn and quartered.

He can't quite let go of the memory of the obscene profits from the 386 and the merely prurient profits from the 486.

Sheer speculation: AMD would be valued considerably higher if microprocessor (and all its attendant manufacturing resources) suddenly ceased to exist.
