will cien lead that charge and leave nortel behind because they have technologies more efficient than nortel's and because they don't have to lug around the legacy networks of the old telecoms?

Jack, I don't know but I really doubt that Cienna has some new technology which will leave Nortel and Lucent in the dust. Changes in communications equipment tend to be evolutionary not revolutionary because of the huge investment in legacy equipment. Changes in the efficiency of such equipment are incremental. Nortel's Packet Core is an example of such incremental improvement in efficiency. Qtera with solitons is another example. Any new technology will have fit with legacy equipment.
