Terry:

I really don't know anything about UNUM except the CFO and Controller are ex AET employees (if they are still there). The whole insurance sector has been taking it on the chin due to interest rates and price competition (and while rates may have bottomed out pricing is still fierce in the market place).

Bob Broatch left AET after having a falling out with the old CEO (R. Compton was the second of 3 poor CEO's at AET). This is a good point in Bob's favor IMO and he subsequently brought Bob Lang to UNUM (all this occured after the demutualization and prior to the acquisition).

The industry is letting it pass due to the Republicans switching sides to ensure their re election. The Democ rats would kill them on this one. The industry has already agreed to the leglislation, political reality the country wants it (as you can see by the industry trade group now advertising a favorable spin).
