Let me give you some yardsticks. In volume desktop drives with 1 platter/2 heads, the electronic content is about 20-25% of total cost. For example, a drive that cost $80 to build, about $16-20 dollars is electronics today. To get the chip(s) cost subtract about $2-4 dollars. This percent will continue as drive cost comes down. This cost will bottom at $12-14 in the next few years. Again, this is for the lowest cost disk drives, not highend or mobile.
I think it will be hard to capture 50% of this business, a better number is 30-40%. Your EPS number is too high for this business. But, the units continue to grow producing a very nice increasing business going forward.>>>

<<<Productivity is surging Sat Feb 05 01:02:00 EST 2000 Feb. 04, 2000 (Electronic Engineering Times - CMP via COMTEX) -- Good news for the chip design community: Design productivity is on the rise. After languishing for several years at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 24 percent, the figure now stands at 35 percent CAGR. This data comes from a collective average among companies using a common approach to measure design productivity and includes the likes of AMD, Cirrus Logic, Conexant, Ericsson, Fujitsu, Infineon, LSI Logic, Matsushita, Mitel, Motorola, Mosaid, NEC and Philips. Increased design productivity stems from reduced engineering labor per unit of output. In fact, the average engineering effort expended per chip-design project is falling....>>>

<<<--Chip industry set global sales record in 1999, according to SIA--
December chip sales of $4.7 billion capped a strong year for chip makers, as the market as a whole set a revenue record of $149 billion, according to a report released today by the Semiconductor Industry Association. Worldwide sales of semiconductors rebounded sharply in 1999, climbing 18.9% annually as demand surged for applications within the Internet infrastructure, e-commerce, and wired and wireless communications markets, the SIA wrote in its year-end report. "We witnessed across-the-board growth in all markets, and product demand was strong in all regions of the world," said SIA president, George Scalise, in a statement.>>>

<<<To: ptrader who wrote (7509) From: ptrader Saturday, Feb 12, 2000 ÿ5:32 PM ET Respond to Post # 7512 of 7515 There seems to be some interest in the Sony Playstation design win. Where did this info come from? Well, Dave French announced this in one of his employee meeting in the last few weeks. He did not give any details, but was very pleased with this design win. CRUS has a very deep relationship with Sony. I know of numerous design activities between CRUS and Sony. French wants to span consumer to PC to communications products for CRUS. In addition, he has alluded to some "deals" in the works. I do expect CRUS to go debt free this year with about $300-400m in the bank. This should move CRUS stock above it's high in 1995.>>>
Hmmm....I think it just might qualify for POW status....?
My best, T. p.s....thanks, ptrader!! |
