I can't see why if there were any bruises from hits to the head they would have been withheld from the media.

If she were killed almost immediately after being hit, how much bruising would there have been? Jim saw an autopsy photo. Had they shaved off her hair? If not, unless there were swelling and/or a cranial fracture, they might not even have noticed.

In addition, my reading of mystery novels suggests that there are ways of knocking someone out that don't leave a trace, but I don't think we're dealing with an expert in this case.
