Yes but there's often lot of smugness and outright revisionism involved here - people look back and castigate famous people in the past for anti-semitic (whatever) views - forgetting that they reflected similar widespread views in the general society. As always in this sort of thing the missing ingredient is context - the context of the times they lived in. In Wagner's case however what he said about Mendlesson (sp?) was despicable and I can't help thinking about it when I think of him - so perhaps there's another context involved too - whether things were said in a cruel or malicious way? And, since we may be getting off topic here - for which I'm largely to blame - is ther a 'favourite quote' which will get us back on track?!
