Because, if the deal was done for cash, instead of stock, then Microsoft gets paid a lot of money. Of course, the amount of money is immaterial to msft, but NOT to inprise/corl.

I'm not following your logic at all. What does this have to do with ORCL, IBM and SUN seeing the combined entity (CORL/INPR) as something to buy when they weren't interested in the separate pieces?
