WHEN you have over 5,000 people working for you with offices spread across the globe and you want all of them to be in touch with one another day in and day out, how do you do it?
Deploy a company-wide intranet solution. That is precisely what Satyam Computer Services Ltd has done by designing a corporate-wide branded intranet - SatyamWorld.
SatyamWorld is charting out an e-future - that is to become an e-commerce-oriented intranet site. Modelled on the ``profit-centre' concept, it is targeted at creating an intranet e-com worth Rs. 10 lakhs by 2000 end and to be the first e-commerce-compatible intranet.
Satyam Computer felt the need for a unique way of promoting the twin objectives of adding speed and greater efficiency to internal interactions and its communications to the associates (employees), and also bringing a greater sense of belonging among its people. This it addressed by designing an exhaustive corporate intranet, according to the company.
This is aimed at creating an innovative platform for internal communications, reduce paper usage for communication within the organisation, compress the time taken by official and corporate communique in reaching associates, by deploying the latest Internet and intranet technologies to overcome geographic barriers.
This has helped make information access easy to associates across the globe. More importantly, the knowledge within the organisation gained through projects and work experiences is compiled and shared through an electronic interface.
The head of Satyam's Corporate Communications, Mr. S.V.L. Narayan, told Business Line the basic objectives of the ``corporate circle' were fused with the creative team's inputs and a comprehensive intranet site was created. The site has abundant scope to constantly improve in terms of content, style and visual appeal.
Across Satyam offices in India, the US, Europe, Japan, Singapore and Africa - in all spread across 40 countries - associates were given ``automatic' default access in their Netscape Navigator.
"Internal communications remains one of the most perplexing challenges for any company, more so for a globally competitive player dealing in a rapidly changing IT environment," Mr. Narayan said.
While making documentation paperless, it enhances the speed of communication within the organisation, cutting down layers of work too. Developed in the form of sections, it hosts the day's news by categorising them into general news, business, IT and sports news; provides search mechanisms; has a feedback mechanism; feeds in corporate information; and has a forum for the exchange of general and technical queries. That apart, the STEP site provides information on the Satyam Technology Entrepreneurship Programme, Knowledge Repository (KR), Post It, a general chat corner, Connect E-ine, a monthly magazine with city pages, and articles from associates and a psychological consulting forum. It encompasses classified advertising columns including sales, rentals and matrimonials.
