FT -- I seem to remember the State being far more intrusive in the paranoia-ridden 50s. Those who didn't go along with the program then were reported by "patriotic Americans" (often in the pay of various gov't or quasi-gov't agencies), investigated by right-wing crackpots, hounded out of jobs, homes and schools, etc. This stuff happened, and not "just" to Communists, leftists, or others whose persecution was officially condoned. You must have some memory of this.
