Can you explain why AMD announced a positive revenue adjustment without at the same time announcing a corresponding earnings adjustment?

Actually the consensus earnings estimates for AMD now seem to be revised upwards almost weekly. But to answer your question, I think this early in the quarter, its much easier to see the upside for revenues than for earnings. I am not an accountant but I suspect this early, it would be very hard to predict any margins...particularly the net profit margin.

Re: "Makes you wonder how Intel will make consensus estimates this quarter."

I believe that the consensus takes this into account already. Witness the positive earnings surprise at year end.

Actually Intel's consensus estimate was raised about 60 days ago, presumably due to guidance from the company. Last quarter a lot of Intel's upside was due to their investments. While I think that this is a perfectly admirable way to make $, meaning that not all your profit has to be from your core business(es), the street seems to be ambivalent on this issue so it might not be good for Intel to come through this way two quarters in a row.

If you take those earnings away, will Intel make its Q1 estimates? I don't know.....it stills seems to be having trouble executing while pressure is mounting for them not to screw up anymore. In that kind of situation, its human nature to keep throwing $ at the problems. What will this do to margins? I don't know.
