Having said this, friends can disagree and I myself do not see the benefit to CMTO shareholders in "exposing" a competitor like TERN. I recall that a recent CNBC piece talked about how one could be more successful picking the weakest company in a hot sector than picking the strongest company in a weak sector.

It has also been my experience that market and industry risk have as much or more impact than company risk. For this reason, I prefer to invest in several of the top companies in an industry unless there is already a clear winner such as CSCO in networking. There must be a compelling reason to justify an attempt to pick the winner before the market has settled the matter. The market is pretty efficient and is good at picking the winners and giving them higher valuations. Picking a stock because of low relative valuations is usually the worst reason to pick a stock.
