Don't know your budget, so I'll stick to the parade and airports.

Stick to Kennedy or Newark. Out of Atlanta you'll probably use Newark. Depending on how you get into NYC travel time is about 90 minutes. Don't rent a car in NYC.

Been in the Parade many times; don't find a spot around the Plaza or below. stick to the area around the Park. There is a Reviewing Stand there, perhaps around 63rd Street. See the Parade from there or just above.

Don't buy the dirty water dogs.
Don't worry about the "y'all".
Don't plan on walking too much the day before or the day after.
Meet up with your son on 2nd Avenue. There are a number of Irish Pubs, a reasonable meeting place.
Don't plan on being able to get into the Irish Pubs.
Skip meeting up with him on Second Avenue. Make a Plan to meet up somewhere though.
Make sure your son knows it takes hours to walk the parade.
Make sure your son knows there isn't any bathrooms until the parade ends.
Make sure you know there aren't any bathrooms around, except in very crowded bars, hotels, et cetera.
Eat a good breakfast before the parade.
Get a lot of sleep before the parade.
Plan to dress warm. Even warm days get breezy in New York.
