Terry--

Trust me: I've got no self-esteem problems. Your--sorry, Ayn's--definition of "altruism" seems to me quite silly. I'm in fact not particularly altruistic by nature, but certainly there's nothing wrong with it when it's sincere, and not just another power-grab.

Hitler and Stalin (and Mussolini--you left him out) began as socialists because otherwise they'd have had no entr‚e to the world of politics and power. None was more than briefly--if ever (here Musso might be the exception: he was impressionable as a youth)--convinced that democratic socialism (and that's how they started) was politically viable. Whatever served: they wanted dictatorial powers. Essentially, all three were insane nationalists. I detect their fervor in your posts about our Founding Fathers.
