Dumb question: What exactly is a directory, and how does it facilitate "e-commerce?"

I've been reading the thread for a month or so (a great thread, BTW) and while I now understand that a directory is a "basic building block" and "crucial" and all that, I still don't know what it is?

FWIW, I see NOVL as probably the only undervalued storage company out there. There are a lot of investors who still think Novell is Word Perfect. As the perception changes, and IMO we are at an inflection point, NOVL will be a new darling.

TIA for a brief primer on directories.
