I think your opposition to social programs that have protected the helpless, while not in any way stifling enormous economic growth, are coming across as hard-hearted. As for your statement that we have very little democracy left, that is preposterous. You can vote for whoever you please for Congress and for President, and they can enact or dis-enact whatever legislation they please. Sounds like democracy to me. I go about my day to day life, saying what I want, doing what I want, being as I like. Smells like freedom to me.

The real threat to "democracy" is the present system of campaign finance. This creates a situation where fat cat contributors can override the will of the people.
