I disagree - this is not "surfing the web" but responding directly to a shareholder. I assume he gets all kinds of stupid mail... but he also would get a direct feel for investor and customer sentiment, unfiltered by his managers or spin handlers. I feel the same way about customer visits and anything else that keeps the guy from being dependent on internal CPQ people for feedback. Pfeiffer would have been spending those hours at a charity event with Carolyn Farb or jetting off to Europe for a tennis match... and getting the "status" from Earl Mason...

I think the biggest reason for Pfeiffer's failure was that he got out of touch with what customers and shareholders thought. Having someone who actually takes the time to read and respond to input from outside the company is a refreshing change.
