Hello mmeggs,

Think about a directory as a specialized database ... that's about all there is to it.

It has the ability to hold records about "objects" or "things" like a person, and "attributes" or "information" about them. So I can put my phone, address, credit card numbers, etc. in a directory that I trust.

The other thing that a directory can do is manage the rights to see the various information. Who can get to what information about who ...

So in e-commerce, one way it could be used is by you, and a vendor, both being in this database, and giving each other rights to see certain information. You "grant" the vendor the right to see your address to ship you the product, your mail address to send you status, and a credit card number so that they can bill you.

Obviously this can grow very big and broad very quickly ...
