But as long as the ties exist to the outside companies - like AOL and CMGI - all companies are at risk of being "mined" for information. This is a wide open door to spying ...

Yep ... talk to many of these folks constantly ... but the centralized ties are there. Novell or Microsoft have the chance to create the completely distributed solution ... we'll see who does it first.

Your analogy is complete dead-on ... this is just like e-mail. What administrator is going to allow a company to host their mail service without complex legal agreements on how any collected data can be used? Or more specifically, that *no* data can be collected and used ...

There are currently no such limits ...
