The magma pool runs directly underneath me as I type. It is close enough to create steam vents on the property that are a result of fresh water coming in contact with it.

Just a few miles up the road there is a geothermal plant that powers one third of the electricity on the Big Island.

The Island has 10 categories of risk of lava flows called 'rift zones'. 10 being the lowest, I live on the #1 rift zone. My land borders a one month long lava flow that took place at this date in 1960. A mile to the South of me it flowed in 1955.

(So yes Sarkie, it is all a volcano, but some of it is still in the making!)
It's only about 22 miles from here that lava is flowing on the surface in four places from the upper slopes and into the sea 24 hours a day.

Property insurance for this you can get, but what has happened here on the island before in recent years is that the lava often moves so slow into an area that the insurance companies will not renew the policy as the threat nears an area, many law suits over this.

I like living on the edge of where Mother Earth is literally forming beneath my feet!
