Heinz, here is another link you might find of interest. This is a bit dated, but it outlines Gold's basic thesis in a fair amount of detail.

There are many within NASA that lean towards Gold's theory of petroleum generation (which is actually an old theory) and bacterial contamination, not from the economic implications but because this theory fits nicely with planetary probe observations of hydrocarbons on Venus, Titan, and other bodies. And, combined with the discovery of nanobacteria deep within the earth, this raises the possibility of life being found under the surface in places like Mars. You may be aware of the controversy over what appear to be meteorites of Martian origin found buried under the ice in Antartica that might indicate the existence of nanobacteria.

Not completely relevant to investing, but good diversion on days when the markets are not doing much.
