eXcelon's software is a subject of growing attention. The company, formerly Object Design, is a leading supplier of object-oriented database software (wherein computer code is broken into self-contained blocks), a growing rival to relational database software (which organizes data as rows and columns). Companies such as MCI WorldCom, Dell, Knight Ridder, and Wells Fargo use its ObjectStore database management system and eXcelon application server for powering large-scale financial systems, e-commerce Web sites, and telecommunications applications. eXcelon also generates nearly 30% of its sales from maintenance, consulting, and related services. IBM owns a stake in the company.
