I've been lucky enough not to have gotten caught in the path of one myself, although I've seen them and been altogether too close for comfort all too often. OTOH, one of the most gorgeous displays I've ever seen was from a plane flying between two of the massive thunderheads at night. The air was perfectly calm, yet we could see blast after blast of lightning streaking through the clouds. Even the flight attendant was dumbstruck by the sight.
