A Patchy Start; Apache's Strong

by Michelle Finley

Apache is the Web's most widely used and -- outside of the Nerd Zone -- its most unknown application.

"We're seeing Linux beginning to move into a position where it can easily become the primary platform for e-business," Baddigan said. "Apache is often bundled with Linux distributions, and as more people use Linux it stands to reason that more will use Apache."

...

And even as they welcome wider interest in Apache, many people within the open-source community believe that Apache's greatest accomplishment has already been achieved: It has kept Internet protocols open.

"Because Microsoft has not controlled the server side of things as expertly as it's controlled the desktop, it is unable to make arbitrary changes to the Internet's protocols in the same way it can make arbitrary changes to the Windows application program interface," Linux Magazine's McMillan said.

"If Internet Explorer and IIS [Internet Information server] were both market leaders, Microsoft would have a very serious shot at controlling the Internet," McMillan said.

Judged by those standards, Apache is already an amazing success.
