ASHANTI GOLDFIELDS CO LTD
Monday, February 14, 2000
Ashanti Goldfields will hold crisis meetings with key shareholders today, reported Canada's Financial Post. The move is designed to derail a Ghanaian goverment assalt on the company's board and even the threat of the nationalization of its Ghanaian assets. Relations between the board and the government have been strained since an Accra High Court ruling last week which forced the company to hold an extraordinary meeting to restructure its board. The ruling also prevented the company from taking up a much-needed loan of $US100-million. The conflict between the company and the government forced the resignation from the board on Friday of Richard Kwame Peprah. He was Ashanti's chairman for 15 years and also Ghana's finance minister.
