this is a good news/bad news scenario. as far as i can tell, dsl demand seems to be far outstripping the rbocs (et al) ability to provide the service.

the industry is in its infancy and the suppliers do not have their act together. i ordered dsl in southern new hampshire (40 miles north of boston) from harvardnet.com. although dsl is available and i am within 3.0 miles of the central office, because of some "coils" used by bell atlantic to increase voice traffic, dsl can not be provided to my specific house. very, very frustrating. these coils need to be replaced before i could get dsl so i am probably years from dsl and when it is available bell atlantic will be the company that will offer it. being a monopoly, they have no incentive to replace those coils until they want to provide dsl to the area. so it looks like it will be cable for me. with awre being a significant percent of my stock portfolio, i hope my experience and some of the others i hear about are actually a very small percent of the people that are demanding dsl.

time will tell.
